Explaining the popularity of St Duthac and his shrine at Tain in the fifteenth century

What is it about?

This article first examines the conflicting evidence for the historical personage behind the cult of St Duthac, before examining evidence from the later middle ages to explain the popularity of the saint with the Scottish royal house in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries

Why is it important?

Prior to my research there had been little in depth research on this particular saint, either to identify who Duthac was or why he had achieved a nationwide (in Scotland) popularity in the fifteenth century
