Flow studies in an aneurysms with Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids

What is it about?

In this study we used both experimental (LDA) and numerical (CFD) methods to investigate the flow field in the patient-specific model of an aneurysm. We found a good correlation between LDA and CFD results. Also we showed that non-Newtonian fluid significantly changes the hemodynamic parameters in the aneurysm sac and it should be considered for the future studies.

Why is it important?

It clearly demonstrates that non-Newtonian behaviour of blood should be taken into account for numerical studies of cerebral hemodynamics. Numerical results were proved by experimental measurements. The highest difference between Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid was observed in the region of slow recirculating flow where the low shear rates exist.
