Trusting Official Statistics in Europe

What is it about?

Trust is a important feature of the society. We study a particular type of trust, individual trust in official number and statistics with a focus for all the European countries. We show that micro (individual) and macro (country) characteristics are important elements for explaining the level of trust in official numbers.

Why is it important?

Our analysis reveals that indicators of wealth (GDP per capita) and inequality (employment rate) are minor determinants of trust in official statistics. Interestingly the country’s accession to the EU significantly increases trust in official statistics among its population, suggesting that supra national regulations, their enforcement and surveillance by the EU-authorities play a very important role.
