Measuring the labour market impact of COVID-19 in real time, the ILO nowcasting model

What is it about?

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the collection and release of labour market data. Using nowcasting techniques we leverage information from available high-frequency indicators to measure the effects on the pandemic on labour markets. Both the scale and speed of disruption were unprecedented.

Why is it important?

During the pandemic policy makers had a lack of timely information in many economic dimensions. By providing timely updates of trends in the labour market we were able to inform policy making at a crucial time for the world of work.
