Maternal depression is the top risk factor for cannabis, alcohol, and tobacco use during pregnancy

What is it about?

We assessed the relative effects of socioeconomic, demographic, and mental health risk factors associated with drug use during pregnancy in a large sample of pregnant women (N=25,734) from Southwestern Ontario. Maternal depression was the top risk factor for substance use during pregnancy and was more important than socioeconomic status and maternal age.

Why is it important?

Our study shows that maternal depression is the top risk factor for substance use during pregnancy, and is more important than education, income, or age. This highlights the need for greater support of the mental health of pregnant women.
