Impact of Oral Nutritional Supplements (ONS) on the oral environment

What is it about?

Oral Nutritional Supplements (ONS) may be prescribed in the treatment of malnutrition. This article explains the impact that ONS may have on the oral environment (teeth and soft tissues), through examination and review of the existing research in this area.

Why is it important?

Our findings show that the majority of Oral Nutritional Supplements have the potential to cause dental and oral disease; namely dental caries, periodontitis and candidiasis. This fact, which may be overlooked by the prescribers of ONS, needs to be considered in future, as increased dental disease can put already medically compromised individuals at higher risk of dental frailty and systemic conditions, such as pneumonia.
