Effects of subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation on speed and coordination of movement

What is it about?

Subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) is a treatment for people with advanced Parkinson's disease that is effective at improving motor symptoms. However, we demonstrate here that during a memory-guided reaching task STN-DBS can improve certain aspects of movement (such as velocity and amplitude) while simultaneously impairing other aspects of movement (reaching accuracy).

Why is it important?

These findings help infer the underlying neurophysiological processes affected by STN-DBS. Furthermore, utilizing memory-guided reaching tasks to test the effectiveness of STN-DBS under different stimulation parameters may pave the way for establishing the most effective STN-DBS parameters that optimize all aspects of movement control.
