Healthcare utilization and cost for individuals with Parkinson's disease in the last year of life

What is it about?

By analyzing population level healthcare data we discovered that individuals with Parkinson's disease require much more homecare and longterm care in the last year of life compared to individuals without Parkinson's disease. While individuals with Parkinson's disease use fewer acute care services, their overall healthcare costs are higher than individuals without Parkinson's disease in the last year of life. Palliative care consultation for individuals with Parkinson's disease reduces the risk of dying in hospital.

Why is it important?

As Parkinson's disease is the fastest growing neurological disorder in the world information about healthcare use and healthcare cost is important to plan for future health care needs. There is an opportunity to reduce healthcare costs while improving quality of end of life care by increasing access to palliative care for individuals with Parkinson's disease.
