Synuclein deposits in the skin of patients with Parkinson’s disease and multiple system atrophy

What is it about?

Prevalent deposition of synuclein aggregates in autonomic cutaneous fibers differentiate Parkinson’s disease from multiple system atrophy in early stage of disease. A higher occurence of synuclein deposits is found in patients with more preserved cutaneous innervation.

Why is it important?

Early differential diagnosis of parkinsonisms is important to reduce the diagnostic delay and to adopt since the onset, correct therapeutic strategies. This leads to a reduction of disease-specific complications and overall to a better management of patients.
