Exercise education programmes for people with Parkinson's: impact and lessons for practice

What is it about?

This systematic review aimed to look at physical activity and exercise education interventions for people with Parkinson's. Education intervention can improve knowledge, exercise confidence and participation. We wanted to look at the active ingredients that make an education intervention effective.

Why is it important?

Our findings highlight the small number of studies that specifically focus on exercise and physical activity education, especially in people with Parkinson's who are recently diagnosed. Regarding the content of education our findings show that although the included studies had a variety of topics, also shared some key topics such as the importance of exercise, goal setting and identifying barriers to participating in exercise. Studies that included these topics showed significant improvements in a range of outcomes following intervention and at follow up.
