Effects of short pulse stimulation on the Parkinsonian gait disorder

What is it about?

Particulary gait disturbances and balance remain postoperative issues in the long-term follow up of Parkinsonian patients with bilateral deep brain stimulation (DBS). A new stimulation mode, the short pulse stimulation, revealed an increased therapeutic window and a reduction of stimulation-induced side effects. In our study, we investigated the effect of short pulse DBS on gait, balance and motor symptoms using the GAITRite system and established clinical scores.

Why is it important?

Our findings show that short pulse DBS and conventional DBS equally improve gait disturbances and motor symptoms in Parkinsonian patients, however short pulse DBS was not superficial over conventional DBS. Still, our data suggest that short pulse DBS might be beneficial in specified cohorts of patients with parkinson's disease.
