Effect of virgin coconut oil on cognition of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease

What is it about?

Virgin coconut oil (VCO) has been suggested as a potential treatment for improving cognitive function in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) due to its ketogenic and antioxidant properties. Here we report the effects of VCO on cognition in people with AD and how the apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 genotype influences cognitive outcomes.

Why is it important?

This study is the first of its kind and the results showed that, while virgin coconut oil (VCO) did not lead to overall improvements in cognition in individuals with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer’s disease (AD) compared to canola oil over the 24-week period, it did demonstrate benefits for apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 carriers. Importantly, VCO did not adversely affect lipid profiles or glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C) levels, indicating its safety for consumption.
