A novel therapeutic approach for Alzheimer's disease-associated cognitive disturbance

What is it about?

Soluble assemblies of amyloid-β protein (Aβ) called Aβ oligomers play a significant role in the pathological mechanism of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). We have discovered that a natural compound, tyrosol can inhibit the neurotoxicity of Aβ oligomers in neuronal cultures and effectively suppress synaptic and oxidative disturbances and mitigate cognitive impairment in the mouse model of AD. We propose that this compound is a drug candidate which can be helpful for the treatment and prevention of AD-associated cognitive disturbance.

Why is it important?

This study suggests a novel strategy against the AD-associated cognitive disturbance through the reduction of Aβ oligomers neurotoxicity by a natural compound.
