Slow waves may be the first sign of Alzheimer's disease

What is it about?

The first changes measured with electroencephalography in patients with Alzheimer's disease may be increased slow wave activity. Furthermore, electroencephalography may be used to diagnose Alzheimer's disease.

Why is it important?

The slow wave activity may be originating from the temporal lobes, which are involved in patients with Alzheimer's disease at a very early stage. Furthermore, standard diagnostic techniques like MRI scans are very expensive and not everyone can have an MRI performed while an electroencephalography is cheap and easy to use.
