An antibody specific for prion protein detects toxic amyloid-beta oligomers

What is it about?

Soluble beta amyloid oligomers play a key role in Alzheimer's disease, but their detection and characterization is challenging. In this work we found that 15B3, an antibody specific for pathological aggregated prion protein, is able to detect beta amyloid oligomers, but not monomers or fibrils. Not only 15B3 detects beta amyloid oligomers, but also antagonize its toxic effects, both in vitro and in vivo. Thus, this antibody may represent a new tool for AD diagnosis and immunotherapy.
