Experiments on the interaction between two rigid sails

What is it about?

Wind-assisted ship propulsion is recently attracting attention as a viable way to cut fuel consumption on board of commercial ships. To favour the uptake of this promising technology, an accurate performance estimate of this new type of hybrid ships is necessary. This work reports the results of a series of experiments on two rigid sails aimed at better understanding aerodynamic interaction effects occurring between them.

Why is it important?

In the present work, the forces and pressures on each sail are measured for two different distances between the two sails and for the entire range of sailing conditions.
