About the future UN Treaty on Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction
What is it about?
The negotiation of the future Treaty governing the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction is in its final stage. This Treaty can generate several benefits for the governance of the oceans. However, deep discrepancies have emerged with respect to the core issues of the regulation. This article identifies various formulas and strategies with the potential to bring positions closer and facilitate the agreement.
Why is it important?
This future Treaty is essential to regulate and protect biodiversity in marine areas representing 62% of the surface of the ocean and nearly 95% of their volume. It will address four core elements: marine genetic resources, including questions on the sharing of benefits; measures such as area-based management tools, including marine protected areas; environmental impact assessments; and capacity-building and the transfer of marine technology.
