Are males and females using their back muscles in different way in a back-dedicated exercise?

What is it about?

The paper focuses on looking if there exist any differences between males and females in the recruitment of back muscles. For that purpose, we ask 19 males and 17 females to produce intense contractions in a back-dedicated exercise. We highlighted some differences in muscle strategy, in particular for the quadratus lumborum muscle.

Why is it important?

This study first highlights the importance of the quadratus lumborum for a back extension exercise in addition to thoracic and lumbar paravertebral muscles. This muscle was more activated in women for high-loading exercise. We also showed the impact of high loads on EMG amplitudes. For a physiotherapist point of view, load strategy and sex-related differences are important for rehabilitation.
