What is it about?

An advanced breath hold radiotherapy technique that minimizes side effects in left breast cancer treatment.

Why is it important?

The study describes the development, implementation and assessment of a Deep-Inspiration Breath-Hold (DIBH) radiotherapy technique that improves radiation treatment in left breast cancer patients by reducing incidental radiation to nearby organs – primarily the heart. Analysis of patients treated with the DIBH technique indicated heart dose could be reduced by ~80% and showed heart and lung doses received were lower than many other radiotherapy methods. The technique is now offered to all suitable left breast cancer patients at our clinic to minimize the side-effects of treatment
