Emojis and digital identity and community

What is it about?

Emojis (emoticons, GIFs and animated images) are an increasingly common feature of digital communication. Their availability and use, however, can be very different across different global populations, genders, and communities. This study compares how people use emojis when watching men and women playing video games and explores how gender affects emoji use.

Why is it important?

Emojis are increasingly common when we communicate, but they do not have consistent meanings and are often misinterpreted. They can also be used for very different purposes. This study gives us important insights into how people use emojis differently to establish identities and form communities (especially across gender lines).
