Defining Satire

What is it about?

Over time, satire as a term has become increasingly broad and ambiguous. Current research is not often on the same theoretical page. This article provides an extended interrogation and definition of the term to create common ground for future research on the topic.

Why is it important?

Given how much contemporary interest there is in satire (e.g. The Onion, The Daily Show, SNL), a clearer theoretical and definitional foundation makes it easier to identify satirical texts, measure their potential effects, and collaborate across disciplines.
