Recognising location shooting in the film Predestination (Spierig Brothers, 2014).

What is it about?

The science fiction film Predestination was shot on location in Melbourne, Australia, but set in Cleveland and New York. Location shooting creates moments within fiction film that can be experienced as a form of uncanny home movie, moments of recognizable sights and sounds. In the case of Predestination, this collides with the uncanniness of the puzzle film narrative itself.

Why is it important?

Sobchack’s notion of the home movie moment, when the viewer recognises a familiar location even if it is standing in for somewhere else, notably did not take into account the impact of genre or sound, which are explored in this article.
