What is it about?

Many women write and create television sketch comedy, historically and in the present day, but this is not often studies or written about. This article discusses the contribution of women to television sketch comedy writing, drawing on examples which include A Black Lady Sketch Show, French and Saunders, Inside Amy Schumer and Wood and Walters.

Why is it important?

Television sketch comedy is not often analysed by scholars, and especially not the writing of it. The majority of the existing scholarship focuses on white, male comedians. This article offers a unique perspective on television sketch comedy by discussing the contribution of women and their writing methods.
