Addressing corporate social media: The legacy of online participatory democracy

The internet was once thought of as a tool that would democratise society. Projects such as the Indymedia network explored the potential of new digital media to expand democracy. Now, the corporate dominance of the online world has challenged that idea and has made many activists question the role of corporate social media in social movements. This article examines this issue, drawing on interviews from former Indymedia activists and the authors own experience.
