What happens when we add critical theory to illustration students' curricula?

What is it about?

A survey of current (2018) shifts in the teaching and practice of illustration plus issues and concerns, this brief editorial is the introduction to an issue of the Journal of Illustration. The topic was also addessed in a round table at the 2017 joint conference in Illustration Research and Illustr4tio, held in Nancy, France.

Why is it important?

The field of illustration has been shifting away from industry focus to something resembling fine art. Are we losing our identity or improving it?
