Borrowing lenses from the West: Analysis of an African media representation of Western nations

What is it about?

The study considers the way in which the Nigerian media represent Western nations. Using content analysis, it finds that this representation is largely based on how the West represents itself, indicating evidence of borrowed lenses.

Why is it important?

The study contributes to a counter-representation of the West, an area that has been overlooked in the literature. What we tend to see is how the West represents Africa, but now how Africa represents the West. This is the gap the study addresses. It also points to the structural imperialistic flows in media representation, highlighting how local media in Nigeria remain dependent on Western media affordances.
