Puppetry and Dementia Care

What is it about?

Discussing puppetry as the combination of the puppeteer with the spectator with the puppet enables us to develop a concept of “withness.” This relationship crucially allows someone living with advanced dementia to become creative spectators capitalising on our affinity with objects.

Why is it important?

The findings of practical research by Caroline Astell-Burt and Theresa McNally make a valuable contribution to the current need to find creative approaches to the care of people living with advanced dementia in care homes.
