Representation of Native Americans in horror fiction

What is it about?

The article looks at the representation of Native American peoples and cultures in a selection of horror stories written by White Euro-American authors. Apart from recycling several ethnic stereotypes, horror fiction tends to present creatures from Native stories, Native burial grounds, and vengeful shamans as a source of threat for modern Americans. Such representation taps into colonial fear of Indians as the evil Other and fear of their retribution for colonial crimes.

Why is it important?

It is necessary to identify literary practices which continue to diminish, marginalize, and demonize Native Americans.
