Literati Lenses: Wenren Landscape in Chinese Cinema of the Mao Era (Review)

What is it about?

Review of Mia Yinxing Liu's new book on Chinese cinema during the Maoist regime. My review casts light on the ways that the author explores the multivalent characters of time-honored literati culture; how the undercurrent of Chinese visual culture interplayed with Maoist cultural and identity politics; and how the film history mirrored the self-portraits of "troubled" Chinese intellectuals in the twentieth century.

Why is it important?

A diachronic, intermedial, and cross-disciplinary approach to literati painting and its profound impact on Chinese socialist cinema. Combined with the intellectual history of twentieth-century China, this historical account provides rich cinematic representations of Chinese literati culture in the Maoist era.
