What is it about?

Patients with co-occurring substance use (SUD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) have high rates of morbidity, mortality, and utilization of medical services, and their symptoms present complex challenges to the clinical staff of the medical emergency department (ED). This paper examines some of the negative reactions these patients engender among ED staff and proposes the use of applied transference-focused principles (TFP) in managing these reactions.
