Letter to the editor responding to a proposal to eliminate lab workup for psychiatry inpatients

What is it about?

Based on experience in the emergency room and the literature, we posed several questions about the findings of an article proposing the elimination of routine laboratory workup for patients who are admitted to inpatient psychiatry units. We also discussed the possible repercussions of this practice for our patients.

Why is it important?

We feel it is important to disseminate this response to encourage further discussion about the medical needs of psychiatric patients and how to best address them.
