Overview of research on mental health crisis lines in the U.S.

What is it about?

Research on crisis lines has become increasingly important with the introduction of the new 988 line. We searched the current research on mental health crisis call, text, and chat lines in the U.S. and found that the research is lacking. Based on the gaps in the research, we put forth policy, research and practice recommendations that will help us better understand who uses these crisis lines, their effectiveness, and the ethics behind storage of user data.

Why is it important?

Our recommendations can lead to more research on crisis lines and will show the importance of funding these lines to better serve populations at increased risk of suicide.
