What is it about?

Little is known about the healthcare utilization characteristics for substance abuse among homeless children and young adults. The authors used secondary administrative data to evaluate differences in substance abuse hospitalizations and emergency department visits among homeless and non-homeless individuals ages 0-24 living in New York. It is shown that those experiencing homelessness experience significantly higher healthcare utilization rates due to substance abuse compared to their non-homeless counterparts.
