Service use and cost for children enrolled in community based programs

What is it about?

A well packaged community based services for children with emotional disturbance helps keep them in their home instead of the hospitals or residential treatment facilities. We used a propensity matched cohort to examined the community based service options and cost.

Why is it important?

Our findings show that the Medicaid waiver program that provides intensive “wraparound” services for children with serious emotional disturbance was associated with a 25% per member drop in spending for 12 months following discharge. A less expensive case management program slowed spending during the enrollment period but was not associated with long-term savings.
