What is it about?

Diagnostic criteria have been developed to characterize a clinical syndrome that may relate to chronic traumatic encephalopathy neuropathology, called Traumatic Encephalopathy Syndrome (TES), and some clinicians have applied these in clinical settings. An adult male developed cognitive, mood, and behavioral problems that were described as progressive, meeting each set of TES criteria, but he demonstrated significant improvement at re-evaluation once mental health treatment was initiated. TES criteria, including the NINDS guidelines, can lead to a misdiagnosis of cognitive/behavioral symptoms in individuals with treatable mental health problems and require further validation before being applied outside of research settings.
