What is it about?

Individual patient meta-analysis of 36 clinical trials to determine best treatment for comorbid PTSD and alcohol and other drug use. Results shed some new light on how optimal outcomes are observed when combining trauma-focused therapies with alcohol-targeted pharmacotherapies.

Why is it important?

In this individual patient meta-analysis of 36 clinical trials (N = 4046), compared to non-manualized behavioral TAU, trauma-focused (TF) therapies, alcohol-targeted pharmacotherapies (ATP), and combined TF/ATP showed the strong effects on PTSD severity, alcohol use and drug use severity. Behavioral therapies that solely targeted AOD and integrated non-trauma-focused therapies show less strong effects. Our results also shed some new light on how optimal outcomes are observed when combining trauma-focused therapies with alcohol-targeted pharmacotherapies.
