Similar with respect to geometry, yet different in terms of bonding

What is it about?

Intermolecular interactions are often simplified to short contacts between specific atoms on neighbouring molecules - reality is less straightforward. Halogen bonds represent one of these "fashionable" interactions. High resolution diffraction experiments help to better understand why molecules approach each other so closely.

Why is it important?

This article sums up the results from our project "Charge density of halogen bonds and interhalogen contacts".
