Interesting compounds made from indole and salicylaldehyde derivatives

What is it about?

We used a simple synthesis to make four compounds, derived from indole and salicylaldehyde. They have been fully characterized, including 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. For two of the compounds, X-ray crystal structures are reported and discussed.

Why is it important?

Closely related compounds have been used for cancer chemotherapy agents, cytodifferentiation, analgesis, anti-inflammation, radio-imaging contrast, colorimetric sensing, metal analyte preconcentration, and metal ligation for catalysis. Also, the X-ray structures of these compounds show an interesting hydrogen bonding pattern.
