New fluorescent compounds based on zinc thiocyanate: influence of structure on spectral properties

What is it about?

The compounds possessing fluorescence properties have been widely studied, however, there is still a deficiency of cheap, non-toxic compounds, which upon irradiation by UV light, produce light visible by naked eye. The paper describes the design, synthesis, structure and luminescence properties of two new coordination compounds based on cheap, simple organic ligands and zinc thiocyanate. Additionally, the paper presents elucidation of the structural properties in terms of the observed fluorescence effects.

Why is it important?

There is a need to design and synthesise new cheap non-toxic compounds and materials possessing fluorescence properties due to their endless applications in modern industry and science. Additionally, determination of the compound structure and subsequent correlation of it with the observed spectral effects is crucial in the determination of the molecular mechanism of the action of such molecules and in the designing of them.
