Green upgrading of SPring-8 to produce stable, ultrabrilliant hard X-ray beams

What is it about?

One of largest high-energy X-ray light source facilities, SPring-8, aims to produce up to 100 times brighter light after a major upgrade. The facility with the circumference of 1.4 kilometer is open to a wide range of user communities such as materials science and industries. This paper presents the major upgrade of SPring-8, called SPring-8-II, including project concepts and expected light source performances. One of important keywords is "green"; the new X-ray light source aims to simultaneously achieve significantly higher light source performances and significant reductions of power consumption.

Why is it important?

Nowadays tens of thousands users are using X-ray light sources over the world, thus progresses in light source performances are of great importance. Especially so-called next generation light sources that are expected to provide orders of magnitude brighter light than conventional light sources could make great impacts on future experiments. Cost effectiveness including energy saving is the important keyword for modern societies. This paper also discuss how we approach towards a green facility while continuously making a progress for future science.
