Amyloidosis therapy using high-energy laser

What is it about?

Amyloidosis is a serious disease caused by the deposition of amyloid fibrils into various biological tissues. The effective treatments have not yet been established today. We found that the amyloid fibrils can be degraded by an infrared free-electron laser by combining experimental and theoretical studies. This laser method can be expected to become a novel strategy for amyloidosis therapy.

Why is it important?

Therapeutic strategies of amyloidosis are not established today. This study shed light on the therapy of the disease by using a new laser technology. In addition, this result shows an applicability of the infrared free-electron lasers as a low-invasive degradation method for the rigid pathological proteins.
