The SASE1 Undulator System of the European X-ray Free - Electron Laser

What is it about?

The European X-ray Free-Electron laser (EuXFEL) achieved first lasing in May 2017 and started operation in September. For the generation of the X-Ray radiation the 210m long undulator systems play the key role. This paper describes all components of the SASE1 system. During commissioning the beam based alignment method was applied to accurately adjust the electron beam so that lasing was obtained. Radiation damage on the undulators is a severe problem and was studied intensively. First radiation damage was already observed.

Why is it important?

This is the first time that a long undulator system is operated in a high duty cycle machine. First operational results are presented and discussed.
