Innovative event-mode imaging detector for neutron diffraction

What is it about?

This work introduces a novel Timepix3-based event-mode imaging neutron diffraction detector system, designed to offer a cost-effective and efficient alternative to traditional detector arrays. Measurements using this system were conducted simultaneously with the ³He detectors at the HIPPO neutron powder diffractometer at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center, allowing for direct comparison and validation. The data reduction for this new system was implemented in the MAUD Rietveld code, facilitating Rietveld analysis and demonstrating good agreement with McStas Monte-Carlo simulations for peak resolution.

Why is it important?

Presenting a cost-effective and innovative alternative to traditional neutron diffraction detector systems, this research addresses the challenges posed by the scarcity of ³He and the high costs of custom-made data acquisition systems. By demonstrating the effectiveness of the Timepix3-based detector system through comparative measurements and simulations, the study offers a viable solution for maintaining and upgrading existing neutron diffraction beamlines and building new ones, thereby making advanced neutron instrumentation more accessible and sustainable. Furthermore, thanks to its versatile configurability, the detector system has the potential to be employed at several different instruments, unifying and simplifying data acquisition and analysis.
