Scattering from structures below an interface

What is it about?

Grazing angles of incidence allow scattering studies to determine structures near interfaces. The paper describes neutron scattering to observe ordering of colloidal particles near a solid/liquid interface.

Why is it important?

The study of latex particles identifies that using the total cross-section and not just absorption of the samples is important in quantitative interpretation of the scattering from different depths. Further, the spread of wavelengths and incident angles needs to be known and incorporated in calculations. The colloidal particles form ordered arrays that extend to depths of micrometres.
