Predicting the response of pain relief drugs when applied to osteoarthritis patients’ skin

What is it about?

By combining the individual patient data from different clinical trials of topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), this study aims to identify factors which may be able to help predict which patients will respond best to which treatment.

Why is it important?

Patient-level predictors of treatment response could improve clinical decision-making by helping to guide the optimum treatment selection for individual patients, at the time of their assessment. Our analysis found that topical NSAIDs are effective for osteoarthritis pain relief and that a greater overall pain relief was found individuals who had the most pain before they started using the drug.
