‘Generation rent’ and the ability to ‘settle down’

What is it about?

This paper shows that many young people face difficulties in the ‘settling’ process as they have to contend with insecure housing, unstable employment and welfare cuts which often force them to be flexible and mobile.

Why is it important?

‘Settling down’ is an important process in young peoples' lives and links to ideas of 'home' and 'place'. It is important to recognise the difficulties that many people face in a context in which mobility is often not a choice.
