What is it about?

The expansion of the craft beer sector has also been unevenly distributed over time and space. Local traditions and movements are taking advantage of profound global beer market changes and accumulating new business experiences. The question is whether and to what extent these common features can be identified in Europe. This paper investigates the locational determinants of the Hungarian craft brewing industry.

Why is it important?

First, despite the growing literature on the craft beer revolution we still have limited knowledge about the drivers of locational choices in Europe. Second, we employ longer-term panel data to evaluate the temporal aspects of spatial distribution in the craft beer sector. Third, we address some unique supply-side factors to explain the peculiarity of the Hungarian craft beer revolution. Finally, we derive implications of broader relevance for regional science, policy, managerial practice, and entrepreneurship in terms of spatial employment.
