Spatial mechanisms of migration processes

What is it about?

Migration is a complex process. We have shown that the spillover effects arising from surrounding regions play a critical role in migration processes as well as regional origin- and destination-specific socioeconomic and environmental characteristics.

Why is it important?

we propose four spatial autoregressive interaction models by introducing three network structures to gravity models. Two significant findings are that: a) the model taking account of dependence structure among origins, destinations and flows is more accurate than the other models. b) population size is the most critical determinant in interprovincial migration from 2005 to 2010 in China, which is greatly strengthened by spatial spillovers.
