What is it about?

This book looks at language used by migrants to Germany from English-speaking West-African countries. English, German, and a number of other languages play a role in this context, and within each language, different ways of speaking can have different meanings and values. The book is interested in what this looks like from participants' perspectives: How useful are the forms of English they command in the German context? How and why do they acquire German? In what situations are these languages (not) useful?

Why is it important?

The book considers a highly charged topic of current political and public debate - the so-called "refugee crisis" - through the eyes of the people most immediately affected by it.
