How to review printed and electronic dictionaries.
What is it about?
This paper proposes that dictionary reviews should based on a set of principles that are generally applicable and that dictionaries should be treated as objects of analysis and examination. Reviewers can take lexicographic, factual and linguistic approaches and combine these with the functions, data and structures of dictionaries. Finally, a review should give a true and fair view of the dictionary.
Why is it important?
This paper introduces a new perspective on reviewing dictionaries by suggesting three perspectives that supplement and complement each other and by focusing on the need of readers and their need for useful information from the reviews. The paper also argues that, in contrast to what many think, it is possible to use the same framework for printed as well as online dictionaries.
